Enforcement of environmental policy is vital to maintain our planet now and for generations to come. Rigorous implementation of environmental policy and legislation is good economic policy and is certainly an ethical and moral obligation too. A clean environment also maintains healthy communities for consumers and works and it is also important for the aesthetics of Ireland and the vitality of our tourism industry. We all have a role to play however the statutory role of environmental protection and law lies with a range of government departments. The principle regulator and enforcement body - the EPA and I'd like to ask the Minister if the EPA have all the resources and powers to enforce environmental law and policy. Every year we pay millions to the EU to avoid harsher fines for failing to meet our environmental obligations. This could become billions by 2030 if we fail to meet our curtail our greenhouse gas emissions
